Prenatal Massage

Prenatal massage helps to relax the body and mind during the first trimester, provides postural support and helps to loosen up the trouble spots of the hips and low back through the second trimester, and nurtures, relaxes, and scrubs out the tight spots- hips, IT Band, low back, sciatic referral, tight/sore neck and shoulders- and the aching general tension/ fatigue/ fascial pulling of the third trimester.  During the fourth trimester (postpartum) massage offers what is likely a rare timeout for moms, providing muscular relaxation, assurance, and nurturing.

When I first started massaging, I mistakenly believed pregnant clients to be delicate flowers, like a robin's egg that needed to be handled so, so carefully.  Watching the birth of my own four pound preemie son did not help in that regard.  However, my opinions evolved fairly rapidly after working in a clinic that saw lots of pregnant women and lots of people involved in motor vehicle accidents.  I started to see pregnant women who were rear-ended, T-boned, and front ended, and overwhelmingly things worked out okay! As I started to work more and more with high risk pregnancies my level of research and education had to be upped to safely accommodate my client's needs.  As I became more educated and saw more and more pregnant clients, my view of pregnant women evolved into thinking of them as mostly unstoppable tanks- not delicate flowers at all.  And my pregnancy massage evolved.

I think there is space in all pregnancy massages for some nurturance: a scrub through the scalp or some forehead massage.  But, individual health considerations notwithstanding, there is often significant benefit from some deep or deepish release of the hips and low-back, some scrubbing through of the scapula, the shoulder-blade, and the pec-girdle: realigning the forward pull from the baby weight so that clients can have more functional and comfortable posture.  Working through patterns of postural dysfunction- head and shoulders pulled forward, and strain on the low-back and neck- can dramatically alter the uncomfortable-ness of pregnancy!

At term, and with your Doctor's/ OBGYN'S/ Midwife's approval, birth prep massage- primarily acupressure- can aid in the transition from pregnancy to labor.

I am super passionate about pregnancy massage, love talking about the profound changes happening in your body, and can't wait to meet you!
